UK: Grolsch no longer available after 35 years

Asahi will no longer sell Grolsch beer in the UK. The Dutch lager with its distinctive chunky green bottles and swingtop bottle lids will disappear from British supermarket shelves after 35 years. The popularity of the brand declined in popularity in recent years with sales in supermarkets and shops falling 22 percent last year to 11million.

As a consequence the beer was delisted by supermarket chains Tesco and Asda and Asahi agreed to end a brewing contract with Molson Coors in the UK. “After 35 years, Asahi and Molson Coors have agreed to end the joint venture agreements for the Grolsch brand in the UK and Ireland. As a result, Grolsch is no longer available in the UK and Ireland."a spokesperson for Asahi said.

Asahi acquired Grolsch from AB InBev in 2016 at EUR 2.55 billion along with other former SABMiller production sites and beer brands including Peroni Nastro Azzurro and Meantime  (inside.beer, 11.10.2016)
