Belgium: AB InBev buys organic Ginette beer

AB Inbev continues its foray into the world of Belgium specialty beers. After last month’s acquisition of 225-year-old Brouwerij Bosteels with well known brands like Tripel Karmeliet, Kwak and  DeuS, the world’s largest brewing conglomerate puts its hands now on Ginette. The beer from Walloon Brabant was created 7 years ago by three friends with a passion for organic beers. 2 years ago one of the three founders left the company and 2 new investors came in. The old owners will stay on board after the sale and work further form their office in Loupoigne on the account of AB InBev.

The organic beer, which is produced in Binche, close to the French border, is available in 4 different kinds:  White, Fruit, Blonde and Triple. Currently the production amounts to 1,500 hectoliters per year.

Didier Hamoir, one of the founders, who sold all their interest in the company to AB InBev, explained the reasons for the sale:  “We recorded an annual growth of 25% since the inception. We brew today 1,500 hectoliters but the current facility cannot exceed 3,000 hectoliters.” As it was impossible for the four shareholders to invest "several million euros" in building their own brewery, they accepted the offer of AB InBev. The plans for Ginette are ambitious: In five years sales of Ginette shall exceed 20,000 hectoliters.
