Brewery Huyghe, the maker of Delirium Tremens, has acquired Het Anker, the historic Mechelen-based brewery known for Gouden Carolus, Maneblusser, and La Cambre. The acquisition unites two renowned breweries with rich traditions and complementary strengths, aiming to bolster both domestic and international market positions.
Brewery Huyghe, with a portfolio of 14 brands and 41 beer styles, produced 250,000 hectoliters of beer in 2023 and achieved a turnover of EUR45 million (USD 48 million). Its strong international distribution network reaches over 100 countries, with 83% of sales generated from exports. The brewery is also a leader in sustainability, investing EUR35 million since 2012 to achieve full CO₂ neutrality by 2035.
Het Anker, founded in the 15th century, brewed 30,000 hectoliters of beer and recorded a turnover of EUR20 million (USD 21.3 million) in 2023. The brewery's diversified offerings include premium beers, Belgian whiskies, and innovative niche products like fruit syrups under its Batteliek concept. Its hospitality operations, including a brewery tour, hotel, and events, enhance its reputation as a cultural and brewing hub.
The acquisition enables Het Anker to leverage Huyghe’s extensive export network, expanding the reach of Gouden Carolus and other brands to over 100 countries. Meanwhile, Huyghe will integrate its advanced sustainability practices within Het Anker’s operations, ensuring a future-proof approach for both breweries. "This acquisition is a natural fit," said Alain De Laet, owner and managing director of Brewery Huyghe. "We share a commitment to quality, tradition, and sustainability, which will allow us to grow together while maintaining the unique identity of each brand."
The deal also concludes a successful eight-year partnership with BNP Paribas Fortis Private Equity, which supported Het Anker’s expansion and diversification. "We are confident that this acquisition will further enhance the unique values of Het Anker," said Raf Moons, Head of BNP Paribas Fortis Private Equity.
Charles Leclef, owner and managing director of Het Anker, commented: "I am proud to entrust my family’s legacy to Brewery Huyghe, knowing they will continue to develop our brands with respect and ambition."
This acquisition underscores the growing consolidation within the Belgian beer market, as breweries look for partnerships to strengthen their positions and expand their reach in a challenging environment.
