China: Carlsberg's Chongqing Brewery Starts Operations at New Greenfield Site

Chongqing Brewery Company (CBC), Carlsberg's operational arm in China, has initiated trial operations at its latest venture—a newly constructed brewery in Foshan, Guangdong province, as reported by China Daily.

The construction of this greenfield brewery, CBC's 27th establishment, began in early 2022, with the aim of meeting the escalating market demand in South China.

Embracing state-of-the-art technology, smart manufacturing practices, and a commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards, the Foshan brewery is poised to emerge as Carlsberg's flagship location. It will also house Carlsberg's inaugural research and development center outside Europe, dedicated to pioneering new product development, innovative packaging designs, and comprehensive market testing tailored to the Chinese and Asian markets.

Following a significant asset restructuring with Carlsberg China in December 2020, the Chongqing-based brewery has transitioned into the exclusive operational platform for Carlsberg Brewery's business endeavors in China.

In the first-quarter financial report for 2024, released in late April, CBC unveiled impressive results. Beer sales volume surged to 8.67 million hectoliters from January to March, marking a notable 5.25 percent year-on-year increase. Meanwhile, operating revenue soared to CNY 4.293 billion (USD 594.35 million), reflecting a robust 7.16 percent surge compared to the corresponding period last year.

The uptick in the high-end beer market during the first quarter is attributed to several factors, including urban development initiatives, expanded sales channels, heightened consumption during the Spring Festival holiday, and the revival of the tourism sector, according to statements from the company.
