Ethiopia: BGI Ethiopia Invests ETB 500 Million in Meta Abo Brewery

BGI Ethiopia, a subsidiary of the Castel Group, has injected ETB 500 million (USD 9 million) into Meta Abo Brewery, aiming to remodel and expand the brewery for increased production capacity and improved brand performance. The investment will be utilized to acquire new machinery and generators, positioning Meto Abo Brewery as one of the largest breweries under BGI's control.

BGI Ethiopia, known for its significant market share in Ethiopia's beer industry, also owns other breweries such as St. George Brewery in Addis Ababa, Zebidar Brewery, Hawassa Brewery, Kombolcha Brewery, and Maychew Northern Brewery. Additionally, BGI Ethiopia is the proprietor of Castel winery and Vineyard.

Last year, Diageo, the British liquor and brewery company, sold Meta Abo to BGI. (inside.beer, 25.1.2022) Diageo had initially acquired the brewery from the Ethiopian Government in 2012 for USD 225 million as part of the government's privatization efforts. Diageo further invested USD 119 million to expand Meta Abo Brewery's bottling line.

In addition to its dominance in Ethiopia's beer market, BGI exports its products to various destinations across Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America.
