France: Soufflet Malt Unveils New Brand Identity and Strategic Growth Plan

Malteries Soufflet has officially rebranded as Soufflet Malt, signaling a new chapter for the company following its acquisition of United Malt Group in November 2023 (inside.beer, 3.7.2023). This change, also demonstrated by a new logo, solidifies Soufflet Malt’s position as the world’s top maltster, combining the strengths of both Malteries Soufflet and United Malt Group to offer unmatched expertise in agronomy, operations, R&D, and decarbonization according to a press release by Soufflet’s parent company Invivo Group. The company is dedicated to serving brewers, distillers, and other industrial players with high-quality, sustainable solutions.

Jorge Solis, new CEO of Soufflet Malt since May, emphasized the significance of this transformation: “Our new identity as Soufflet Malt represents a major step in our journey, showcasing our enhanced capabilities and unique position to meet the growing global demand for premium malt products. We go beyond simply converting barley to malt; we are driven by sustainable innovation and strive to harness the true power of malt.”

Soufflet Malt maintains a robust global footprint with 41 malting plants across 20 countries and an annual production capacity of 3.7 million tons. This global reach, combined with strong local partnerships, ensures a reliable and adaptive supply chain, essential in a world facing geopolitical and environmental challenges. The company leverages over 200 years of industry legacy, drawing strength from well-recognized brands like Cryer Malt, Bairds Malt, and Canada Malting Co. Ltd.

“Our ability to blend local roots with a powerful global industrial presence allows us to bridge farmers with a wide array of customers, from small craft brewers to major international brands,” Solis added. The company's new executive committee, including regional leaders Guillaume Couture (EMEA), Jean-Christophe Figueroa (Americas), and Philip Robinson (APAC), aims to drive operational excellence and sustained growth.

Soufflet Malt places sustainability at the forefront of its strategy, focusing on developing low-carbon value chains and advancing the agro-ecological transition. With the support of Soufflet Agriculture, the company pioneered the first traceable low-carbon barley chain in 2023. This chain employs practices that reduce carbon emissions on farms through optimized nitrogen use, soil carbon storage, and increased biomass production.

Soufflet Malt aims to achieve 80% sustainable barley sourcing and reduce its scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 50% as part of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Additionally, it plans to cut water consumption by 30% and recover all waste by 2030.

The malt sector benefits from robust global demand, driven by beer consumption in emerging markets, the premiumization trend in mature markets, the rise of craft and alcohol-free beer, and strong interest in premium whisky. Non-traditional sectors, such as cosmetics and food, are also tapping into malt’s versatility for natural, health-oriented products.

Soufflet Malt’s strategic focus is anchored on four main pillars: fostering sustainable and localized value chains, innovating to support customers’ sustainability goals, embracing digitalization for competitive advantage, and exploring adjacent markets where malt can serve as a high-value ingredient.

With a dynamic new leadership team and a clear strategic vision, Soufflet Malt is poised for its next phase of growth, uniting its employees, growers, suppliers, and customers under the shared ambition to “Unleash the Power of Malt.”

The new slogan encapsulates the company’s mission to maximize the potential of malt as more than just a brewing ingredient. This approach highlights malt’s versatility and significant value, extending its applications beyond traditional uses in beverages to areas such as food and cosmetics. By leveraging the full power of malt, Soufflet Malt aims to inspire new products and enhance existing ones, driving forward a future that benefits consumers and industries alike.
