Following a string of recent insolvencies in the German brewing sector, Gräflich zu Stolberg'sche Brauerei Westheim has become the latest casualty. On July 27, 2026, the company applied for an insolvency proceeding in self-administration at the local Amtsgericht Bielefeld. The court has already approved the request and ordered provisional self-administration.
Employees were informed about the impending legal procedure during a staff meeting on the preceding Friday. Despite the financial restructuring process, the brewery stated that daily operations, including production, filling, and delivery, will continue as planned without any restrictions. This legal step follows similar recent insolvency proceedings involving other domestic producers such as Eichbaum, Mauritius, Leikeim, and Wolters.
In January 2024, hotelier Alexander Fitz acquired a stake in the brewery through a capital increase. Following this transaction, his managing director Dirk Brüninghaus joined the management board in Westheim alongside owner Moritz Freiherr von Twickel. Fitz has a history of regional brewery investments. In 2019, he took over the Hofbrauhaus Arolsen, which had been closed previously by its operators Andreas Brühne and Dirk Brühne. He later acquired a majority stake in the Oetker subsidiary Allersheim in Holzminden. Neither of these previously acquired locations produces beer anymore, partly because Fitz consolidated his brewing interests by subsequently entering Westheim.
