India: Lion Brewery Returns to Indian Market After 60-Year Absence

Lion Brewery has re-entered the Indian market following an absence of over six decades. The company, originally founded in London in 1836, has launched its premium portfolio in Delhi through an exclusive partnership with Indian importer Copperdrop Spirits.

The initial rollout features the Island Lager and Pale Ale brands, both currently available in 330 milliliter (0.0033 hl) bottles in the capital. The brewer plans to expand its distribution footprint to the neighboring states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in a second phase. The move aims to capture the country's premium beer sector, which, according to market data from the IMARC Group, is expanding at an estimated rate of 42 to 45 percent annually.

Historically, the brewer was among the pioneering producers of the India Pale Ale style, which was heavily hopped to survive the maritime journey to the subcontinent during the British era. While the original Thames-side brewery ceased operations long ago, the brand was resurrected in Singapore in 2018. Managing Director Will Julius noted that the return is a symbolic continuation of the company's historical legacy. Copperdrop Spirits, led by founder Rohan Khare, aims to leverage this heritage to appeal to younger, urban consumers driving the shift toward higher-end imported options.

The overall Indian beer market was valued at approximately USD 4.5 billion in 2023 and is projected to see a compound annual growth rate of 8 to 10 percent through 2028.
