Myanmar: Kirin to buy Mandalay Brewery

In an effort to strengthen its position in the Asian market, Japanese brewer Kirin is buying Myanmar’s Mandalay Brewery from the military-backed Myanmar Economic Holdings. In 2015 Kirin already bought local market leader Myanmar Brewery, which will give the company now a control of 90% of the beer market in Myanmar.

After the announced retreat from the Brazilian market where the company sold its entire business to Dutch rival Heineken, the Japanese brewery looks to defend its strong position in the fast growing South East Asian market against the other international competitors like AB InBev, Heineken and Carlsberg which are all headquartered in Europe.

As announced, Kirin will create a local subsidiary based in the northern city of Mandalay.
