According to Just Drinks, Capri-Sun is considering a return to plastic straws in Switzerland, following challenges with the paper straws that were introduced as part of the brand’s sustainability efforts. The switch to paper straws, aimed at reducing environmental impact, has led to numerous consumer complaints due to issues such as the straws disintegrating before the drink is finished, especially frustrating for parents of young children. In light of this feedback, Capri-Sun is now re-evaluating its strategy and may reintroduce plastic straws in the Swiss market.
While businesses operating in EU member states must comply with the bloc’s Single-Use Plastic Directive, which bans items like plastic straws, Switzerland is not bound by these regulations. As a non-EU member, Switzerland allows the use of unattached plastic straws, giving Capri-Sun more flexibility to revert to plastic in this market.
Capri-Sun stressed that any move back to plastic straws in Switzerland would be a temporary measure, as the company continues to search for a more durable, sustainable solution that satisfies both environmental concerns and consumer demands. Despite the potential change, the brand remains committed to its broader sustainability goals and will keep exploring alternatives that align with global efforts to reduce single-use plastics.
