Nile Breweries Limited (NBL), the No 1 provider of locally produced beer in Uganda with a 59% market share, has shut down its production line for Chibuku, a commercial sorghum beer. The company claims that it was promised a tax holiday when the plant was set up, but in fact it had to pay a 30% excise duty. This discriminated the company against illicit brews and made production unprofitable.
