Last year 520 new breweries opened in the UK, 33% more than the year before. This makes UK the country with the most craft breweries per capita in the world. While in the UK 25 breweries serve one million people, the same number for Germany is only 16 in Germany and 15 in the U.S.
As already reported earlier (inside.beer, 19.3.2017), the total number of breweries worldwide has increased to 17,732 in 2016, with more than one quarter (4,750) being in the US, followed by the UK (1,655), Germany (1,295), Italy (942), Spain (664), France (662), Canada (612), Netherlands (434), Switzerland (419) and Australia (410).
In step with the increasing number of craft breweries, beer trademarks registrations in the UK have also risen by 19%. Not only the increasing number of craft breweries but also supermarkets and larger drinks companies, capitalizing on the popularity of the sector, have pushed registrations upwards.
In 2007, the number of beer mark registrations was only 968. Nine years later, this number more than doubled to 1,983, which is 317 more than the year before.
