UK: Heineken Shifts Production From Brixton Brewery to Beavertown

Brixton Brewery, a renowned craft beer brand from south London, is closing its own production facility in Loughborough Junction and moving its operations to Beavertown Brewery in Enfield, north London. Both breweries are fully owned by Heineken: Brixton Brewery sold a minority share to Heineken in 2017 (inside.beer, 28.11.2017) before ittransitioned to full ownership in 2021 (inside.beer, 1.2.2021). Beavertown was also part-owned by Heineken since  2018 (inside.beer, 26.5.2018) before it was fully acquired by the Dutch brewer in 2022.

This shift in production is driven by increasing demand and the need for a more efficient production process. Brixton Brewery, under full Heineken ownership, is expanding its operations in collaboration with Beavertown. The move to the larger, more sustainable Enfield site will help the brewery meet rapidly growing demand while reducing its environmental footprint.

Co-founder and managing director Jez Galaun stated, “Growth is a nice problem to have, but it is not without its challenges. With our lease expiring and demand rising, it was essential to find a new way to operate.” Galaun highlighted the benefits of Beavertown's cutting-edge production facility, which was designed for efficiency and sustainability, paving the way for a greener future for Brixton Brewery.

Despite the relocation of production, Brixton Brewery remains committed to its roots. Its original small-batch brewery and taproom in Brixton will continue to operate, producing limited-edition beers. The company is also looking for a new warehouse to ensure local deliveries in south London can continue.

Galaun reassured the community and staff, stating that support for existing production employees would include opportunities at the Enfield site. Meanwhile, non-production staff are expected to see minimal changes in employment conditions.

The shift comes on the heels of other industry news, including the recent closure of Fourpure Brewery’s Bermondsey facility, which has relocated production to Magic Rock Brewing in Huddersfield. Both breweries were part of Kirin’s craft beer portfolio, held by its subsidiary Lion, before they were sold in 2022 to Odyssey Inns, a company now investing in the craft beer sector (inside.beer, 8.8.2022).
