UK: Number of UK Breweries Declines Dramatically

Recent industry figures from SIBA reveal that the United Kingdom’s total number of breweries has dropped by 100 over the past year, falling from 1,815 in January 2024 to 1,715 in January 2025. This notable decline, reported by Brewery News, SIBA National on 21 February 2025, reflects a persistent trend throughout 2024—with closures peaking at 38 in the first quarter and easing to 24 in the final quarter.

Regional data highlights significant disparities. While most areas experienced a downturn, Wales recorded a modest increase and Northern Ireland faced a steep percentage drop exceeding 20%. Regions such as the South East and the Midlands registered the largest absolute declines, contributing to an average nationwide reduction of approximately 5.5%. Challenges including legacy Covid debt, restricted access to local pubs, and slim profit margins continue to burden small brewers.

In parallel with these closures, the sector is witnessing notable consolidation. Several independent brewers, including Wild Card, Cronx, and Gritchie Brewing Company, have shuttered their operations. Moreover, distressed circumstances have spurred mergers and acquisitions: Keystone Brewing Group acquired brands like North Brewing whoich was rescued from administration (inside.beer, 6.2.2025), as well as Fourpure and Magic Rock Brewing, consolidating production in key regions (inside.beer, 6.1.2025). Additionally, Sunrise Alliance Beverages took over Gipsy Hill, integrating its operations while maintaining its market presence in South London, (inside.beer, 30.10.2024).

Industry leaders, including SIBA boss Andy Slee, stress that without enhanced governmental support and improved market access—especially through local pubs—the brewing community will continue to grapple with operational challenges despite robust independent beer demand. Stakeholders remain cautiously optimistic that strategic interventions could stabilize and eventually reverse the downward trend.
