USA: BrewDog opens the world’s first crowd-funded beer hotel

BrewDog, the Scottish brewer who also operates a pub chain, will open on Monday the world’s first crowd-funded beer hotel in Columbus, Ohio. Guests will be given a unique experience around beer. Each of the 32 rooms has its own beer taps installed and a mini-fridges stocked with beer in every room and the showers. Select rooms will have a wet bar and views of BrewDog's sour beer facility.

Guests can also soak in a hot tub filled with IPA or have a malted barley massage for a vitamin B-rich spa experience. As the name of the hotel – DogHouse - implies, you can even book a dog-friendly room.

"From welcome pints of Punk IPA and malt massages to brewery views and shower beers, this will be the world's first and only fully immersive craft beer experience from check in to check out," James Watt, co-founder and CEO of BrewDog, said in a statement.

The DogHouse will largely be funded by the brewery’s Equity for Punks crowdfunding campaign. The company collected £19 million (US$ 24.5) in funds for the project but failed its £25 million (US$ 32) goal.

In 2017 BrewDog achieved revenues of £111.55 (US$ 144m), 55% up on 2016. Adjusted EBITDA increased disproportionately lower by 47% to about £ 9 million (US$ 11.6). The brewery shipped a total of 344,387 hl in 2017, thereof 42% in bottles, 34% in cans, 15% in returnable kegs and 10% in one-way kegs. BrewDog brewed 96 different beers in 2017 and operated 30 BrewDog bars in the UK and 46 worldwide. Next to the two breweries in Scotland and USA, the company plans to open new breweries in Australia and Asia (China).

BrewDog’s Columbus beer hotel will not stay the only one. The company is currently busy to open the second beer hotel adjacent to BrewDog’s brewery in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. According to plans communicated in February, the 26-room hotel will open in the first half of 2019. (inside.beer, 13.2.2018)

BrewDog in these days also announced to launch a streaming subscription service. The company will initially offer 14 original programs with over 100 hours of programming centered on drinking culture at a price of $4.99 per month. BrewDog Network is aiming to sign up 50,000 subscribers in the first six months, which will make the new service sustainable.
