USA: PepsiCo's Gatorade Dives into Alkaline Water Market

PepsiCo's renowned Gatorade brand is making a splash in the alkaline bottled water market with an new entry set to hit shelves early next year – Gatorade Water.

This innovative beverage is a zero-calorie, unflavored alkaline water, meticulously purified using a cutting-edge "7-step, enhanced filtration process." Gatorade Water comes in two bottle sizes – 700 milliliters and 1 liter – and is infused with electrolytes, containing 65 to 90 milligrams of sodium, respectively.

The inclusion of sodium, a key electrolyte, makes Gatorade Water an ideal choice for those seeking all-day hydration, according to Gatorade portfolio president Mike Del Pozzo, who spoke with USA TODAY about the new product.

It's worth noting that the electrolyte levels in Gatorade Water are notably lower than those found in traditional Gatorade, which also features potassium and sugar (carbohydrates). Additionally, Gatorade's 2021 addition, Gatorlyte, boasts even more electrolytes than standard Gatorade, offering rapid rehydration. Another recent addition, Gatorade Fit, marketed as "healthy real hydration," contains essential vitamins and reduced levels of sodium, sugar, and carbohydrates compared to classic Gatorade options.

Earlier this year, PepsiCo, the parent company of Gatorade, launched the Gatorade Portfolio, a comprehensive collection encompassing all its sports and fitness brands, including Propel fitness water, Fast Twitch energy drinks with caffeine, Muscle Milk protein shakes and powders, and Evolve plant protein shakes and powders.

Mike Del Pozzo explained that each of these products is tailored to serve different needs in the exercise and recovery process. After a workout, individuals can rehydrate with Gatorade or Gatorlyte, and they can also enjoy a post-workout shake. Depending on their activity level, consumers can now turn to Gatorade Fit or Gatorade Water to complement their daily water intake.

"It became increasingly clear that athletes continue to be wellness-minded, and we have an opportunity, with Gatorade Water, to expand our portfolio," Del Pozzo noted, highlighting the brand's commitment to meeting the evolving needs of health-conscious individuals.
