Soufflet Malt, a subsidiary of the agricultural cooperative group InVivo, is moving forward with a significant capacity expansion at its malting facility located in the port of Strasbourg. The project, which passed through the necessary public consultation stages earlier this year, aims to increase the site’s annual production capacity from 90,000 tonnes to 130,000 tonnes of malt.
This expansion aligns with the broader MALTiply 2030 strategy initiated by the parent company. The long-term plan focuses on consolidating production at high-efficiency European sites. As part of this optimization process, the group recently streamlined its portfolio, which included the complete withdrawal from domestic production in Germany and the closure of its remaining less competitive malting plants (inside.beer, 2025-12-09). The expanded Strasbourg facility is strategically positioned directly on the German border to continue servicing these clients. The plant is located approximately 85 kilometers from the former Soufflet malting site in Heidelsheim and roughly 150 kilometers from the closed facility in Gernsheim, allowing it to efficiently supply the southern and central German brewing markets.
In addition to the increase in volume, the company is emphasizing environmental sustainability at the Strasbourg location. A logistics partnership with Europorte has been implemented to utilize Oleo100, a biofuel, for the rail transport of malting barley. This initiative is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 900 tonnes per year. Furthermore, the facility has integrated its operations into the local R-PAS industrial network, allowing the plant to supply industrial waste heat to the Strasbourg municipal district heating system, contributing to the heating of surrounding residential and public buildings.
