Germany: Hofbrauhaus Wolters to Cease Production and Close Historic Brewery Site

Hofbrauhaus Wolters is discontinuing all beer production at its historic facility in Braunschweig on December 31, 2026, marking the end of a nearly four-century brewing tradition and affecting approximately 90 employees.

The decision comes after extensive investor negotiations failed to secure a viable future for the production plant following the company's filing for self-administration insolvency in June (inside.beer, 19.06.2026). Managing Director Nils Handke stated that the closure of the manufacturing site had become unavoidable due to persistently weak beer sales across the German market and escalating operational costs. While brewing operations are set to conclude, discussions regarding the potential sale of the Wolters brand rights to an external investor remain ongoing.

The announcement drew sharp criticism from the trade union NGG, which denounced the rapid timeline between the opening of formal insolvency proceedings and the final shutdown decision. Representatives argued that the process resembled an abrupt emergency stop rather than a structured restructuring attempt. Legal oversight for the proceedings is being handled by general representatives from Eckert Rechtsanwälte and Eckert Assurance, with Torsten Gutmann from Pluta serving as the preliminary insolvency administrator. Local political figures, including Braunschweig mayor Thorsten Kornblum and members of the CDU-Ratsfraktion, expressed profound regret over the loss of the regional landmark, which follows a wave of similar brewery closures across Germany, including the shutdown of the local Oettinger-Brauerei site in the same city (inside.beer, 23.07.2025).
