Hofbrauhaus Wolters filed for insolvency in self-administration at the district court of Braunschweig on June 19, 2026. This move follows the recent closure of the Oettinger production site in the same city (inside.beer, 23.7.2025), marking the second significant blow to the local brewing landscape in a short period. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of the regional Volksbank Brawo, the brewery now aims to fundamentally reorganize its operations and achieve economic stabilization.
The decision arrives amidst a period of considerable leadership turmoil at the parent institution. Volksbank Brawo had repeatedly injected capital into the brewery over the last few years to prevent a financial collapse. However, under the new board led by Heiner Arnoldi, the bank has decided to stop further funding. According to the Braunschweiger Zeitung, the bank declined to provide a new credit line, concluding that such measures would not resolve the company's underlying structural challenges. Following the departure of the long-term CEO of the bank, Jürgen Brinkmann, who was dismissed with immediate effect in May 2026, the brewery was placed under the protection of the Sicherungseinrichtung des Bundesverbandes der Deutschen Volksbanken und Raiffeisenbanken.
The brewery, which was acquired by the bank in 2020, has seen its output fall to less than 400,000 hl. Despite hiring industry veteran Nils Handke as managing director in 2023, the downward trend of the Wolters brand could not be reversed. With high production and energy costs weighing on the business, Handke's contract, which expires on June 30, 2026, will not be renewed.
To manage the restructuring process, the management is being supported by the insolvency law firm Eckert Rechtsanwälte, while Eckert Assurance provides professional business restructuring advisory services. The self-administration proceedings are intended to grant the company the necessary leeway for a strategic realignment in a difficult market environment.
