The Carlsberg Group has signed an agreement to sell the property of its brewery site in Trondheim, Norway, in a transaction worth NOK729m (USD84.8m). Not included in the deal is the brewery E.C. Dahls, founded in Trondheim in 1856, which remains part of the Carlsberg Group.

One of the priorities is craft & specialty beer, and E.C. Dahls will continue to brew and serve innovative, new craft brews. We will preserve E.C. Dahls’ brewery and develop it further as a craft & specialty brewery and cultural arena, that will be an attractive gathering for people and guests in the city,” says Heine Dalsgaard, CFO Carlsberg Group.
“The transaction is in line with Carlsberg Group’s continuous evaluation of non-core assets and disciplined approach to take out cost while positioning the business for growth,” Carlsberg said in a press statement today.
Buyer of the property is consortium of grocery company NorgesGruppen, coffee roaster Kjeldsberg and house-builder Heimdal Gruppen.
In 1856, Erich Christian Dahl founded E.C. Dahls Brewery in Trondheim. E.C. Dahls Bryggeri soon became the largest brewery in the region. In 1966, the brewery was merged with Trondhjems Aktiebryggeri, which was founded in 1899 and Trondhjems Bryggeri, which dated back to 1919. E.C. Dahls Bryggeri is now owned by Ringnes, which is part of the Carlsberg Group.
Various beer styles such as export, Bock, bjor and Bayer have been brewed over the years, and Lysholmer, the greatest beer success in Norwegian history, made its appearance in 1983. The brewery still brews the renowned Dahls Pils, which yeast can be traced back over 70 years.
Since 2016 Dahls Brewery has teamed up with Brooklyn Brewery to create a new range of beers. The first three have been named Lamo Wit, Pepra Saison and Bolt IPA.
