Mozambique: AB InBev counterattacks Heineken with new 2 million hl brewery

Exactly one year after Heineken has laid the foundation stone for a new $100 million brewery in Marracuene in Mozambique's Maputo Provincen (inside.beer, 11.12.2017), market leader AB InBev has done the same for a new $180 million brewery in the same district. Ragendra de Sousa, the Mozambican Minister of Industry and Trade, laid on Friday, 7 December 2018, the first stone for the construction of the new brewery with a production capacity of 2 million hectoliters. Cervejas de Mocambique (CDM), AB InBev’s local unit already operates three breweries in the country where it brews the 2M and Laurentina brands

“This is without doubt the largest investment by CDM and by the beer sector in Mozambique since our foundation in 1995,” CDM’s General Manager and AB InBev’s Business Unit President Southern Africa, Pedro Cruz, said.

Mozambique’s beer market is still underdeveloped with a consumption of 11 liters per capita but is growing fast with an increase of more than 20 percent in the first half year of 2018. The population of the South-Eastern African state amounts to about 29 million people and is growing by about 2.45% per year.
