USA: Bart Watson Named CEO of Brewers Association

The Brewers Association, a nonprofit representing small and independent American craft brewers, has announced the appointment of Bart Watson as its new president and chief executive officer (CEO), effective January 6, 2025. Watson, who is currently the association's vice president of strategy and membership and its former chief economist, brings over a decade of experience within the organization.

The decision, confirmed by the Brewers Association Board of Directors on December 12 during a meeting in Atlanta, followed a national search led by Kittleman & Associates. Watson succeeds Bob Pease, who announced his retirement earlier this year after serving as CEO since 2014 and contributing to the association for more than 35 years. Pease was instrumental in transforming the Brewers Association into a powerful advocacy group for small and independent breweries, significantly influencing legislative and market access issues (inside.beer, 25.07.2024).

Watson's responsibilities will include addressing legislative and regulatory challenges facing independent craft breweries, advocating for members in the media and industry, and supporting the board in its strategic initiatives. He will also oversee events and resources aimed at benefiting the association’s members.

Watson, a graduate of Stanford University with advanced degrees in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, joined the Brewers Association in 2013. His academic background includes roles at the University of Iowa and UC Berkeley. Reflecting on his new role, Watson highlighted the recent difficulties facing the craft beer sector and expressed his commitment to supporting members and reinvigorating the industry.
