On July 3, 2026, the Amtsgericht Braunschweig placed Colbitzer Heide-Brauerei under preliminary insolvency administration. The move follows the financial collapse of its parent company, Hofbrauhaus Wolters, which filed for insolvency in self-administration just a few weeks prior (inside.beer, 2026-06-19).
Along with the brewing subsidiary based in Colbitz, Saxony-Anhalt, the service entity Wolters Service, which provides brewery-related services and employs nine people, has also been included in the ongoing restructuring measures of the group. Colbitzer Heide-Brauerei, a traditional regional producer founded in 1816, currently operates with a small team of five employees. The brewery produces the regional beer brand Colbitzer using local water from the surrounding heathlands, while bottling and distribution have been centrally handled by Hofbrauhaus Wolters in Braunschweig.
The insolvency of the subsidiary is a direct consequence of the parent company's inability to provide further financial backing. For years, Hofbrauhaus Wolters had subsidized the operations in Colbitz. The entire group has been suffering from persistently weak beer sales across Germany, coupled with significantly increased production and energy costs.
Despite the court order, business operations are continuing without interruption. Torsten Gutmann, lawyer and insolvency administrator at the restructuring firm Pluta, stated that the preliminary administration will allow for a thorough economic analysis. The immediate goal is to stabilize both Colbitzer Heide-Brauerei and Wolters Service, secure the current workforce, and develop a viable long-term restructuring solution for the historic brewing site.
